The Academic Code

Academic Load

The school year is divided into three terms: the first and second semesters, and the summer term. The approved curricula of the EM Program require normal loads of about 24 units per semester. A maximum of nine units is allowed for the summer term.
One unit of credit for a lecture course is equivalent to one hour of class or recitation each week. One unit of credit for NBV fieldwork and/or any field or project implementation work is equivalent to two to three hours of lecture or recitation per week.
Any irregularity in the semestral academic load resulting from back subjects, uncoursed prerequisites, overloads, underloads, cross-enrollments, and audits must first be consulted with the Registrar and approved by the Program Director or the Deputy Program Director, through the Year Level Coordinator, before you are allowed to enroll.
Any modification in the academic load after you have enrolled will be allowed only for justifiable reasons and upon consultation with the Registrar and the approval of the Program Director or the Deputy Program Director through the Year Level Coordinator. No further modification in the academic load shall be allowed one week after the start of regular classes.

Academic and Non-Academic Subjects

Academic subjects are governed by the policies enumerated in this Academic Code. Their grades will be included in the computation of your General Weighted Average. All EMP subjects, including PE, are considered academic, except for the Personal Development Series (PDS) and the National Service Training Program (NSTP).
The EM Retention Policy covers all EMP subjects, except NSTP. Thus, PDS is taken into consideration when applying the policy.

Maximum Residency

You are allowed to course your EMP curriculum for a maximum of six (6) school years. You will not be allowed to enroll if you exceed the allowable maximum residency period.

General Weighted Average

The general weighted average (GWA) is computed on the basis of the grades (1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.25, 2.50, 2.75, 3.00 and 3.50) given for all subjects completed at and/or credited by the University, excluding PDS and NSTP.
Incomplete marks (INC) and grades for audited courses are not included in the computation.
To compute your GWA:
1. For each academic subject you have completed throughout your entire stay in the University, multiply the number of credit units by the corresponding grade;
2. Add all the points and get the total; and
3. Divide this total by the total number of credit units of all the academic subjects you have taken.
The GWA is used to determine your eligibility for academic recognition and honors.

Separation from the EM Program

If you voluntarily separate from the EMP, or are dropped from the rolls for academic reasons, you may be granted an honorable dismissal provided you have a good disciplinary standing.
